Golf is Good!

A famous movie said greed is good, but it was mistaken. Golf is good.

It’s been 2 months since the end of my treatments. Five months since my diagnosis.  It seems like years have gone by, but it’s just been 5 months.  I’m continuing to improve – eating is getting easier, the skin on my neck is healed (finally!), and I can taste a few random things like berries, cauliflower, and beer.

We were lucky enough to get our covid vaccines, and our 2nd dose waiting period ended yesterday.  So we feel a little better about carefully venturing out. Yesterday, for the first time since August, I played golf.  I played ok, but the real news is just that I played.  Outside, for 4 hours or so, hitting the ball, bullshitting with my partners, walking, feeling free.

I’ve always loved golf — it’s outdoors, it’s challenging, you compete with yourself and others. To me, it’s a place where I can truly escape and think of nothing but golf the entire time.  Cancer has been a difficult experience, one I wouldn’t wish on anybody, obviously being the thing that filled my thoughts these past months.  Suzy and I live on a golf course, and the 5th green is right outside, just taunting me because I couldn’t be out there.  The combo of cancer and the pandemic kept me off the course. I’ve loved watching the golfers play, but I was so envious. But yesterday I played at McDowell Mountain and today I hit balls on the driving range.  Thinking of nothing but golf the entire time. It was truly glorious.

Golf is good.
